Xijing Xu

Xijing Xu is a designer and artist born in Changsha, China, and currently based in Berlin, Germany. She studied industrial design at China Academy of Art in Hangzhou (2012–2016) and product design at Universität der Künste Berlin (2017–2018).

Drawing on her experience in the agri-tech sector and in artistic culinary projects, she has developed a sustained interest in long-term research into food systems and material culture. Working across objects and installations, she engages with fermentation and microbiological processes as ways of exploring migration, cultural exchange, and transformation.

Her current work is rooted in research on cereal varieties – their histories, cultivation, morphology, uses, and preservation – while also exploring the potential of agricultural by-products. She is particularly interested in rediscovering the possibilities of traditional and ancestral varieties beyond industrial hybrid crops.

Her work has been presented internationally, including at Milan Design Week (2017, 2018), IMM Cologne (2019), abC Art Book Fair (2022), and Singapore Design Week (2024), among others.
